정의

• 세 수 [math]\displaystyle{ a }[/math], [math]\displaystyle{ b }[/math], [math]\displaystyle{ c }[/math]가 차례로 등차수열인 경우, [math]\displaystyle{ b=\frac{a+c}{2} }[/math]가 성립한다.

증명

1. [math]\displaystyle{ a }[/math], [math]\displaystyle{ b }[/math], [math]\displaystyle{ c }[/math]가 차례로 등차수열이라 하자.
2. [math]\displaystyle{ b-a=c-b }[/math] 이므로 [math]\displaystyle{ 2b=a+c }[/math]가 된다.
   
3. [math]\displaystyle{ 2b=a+c }[/math]를 정리하면, [math]\displaystyle{ b=\frac{a+c}{2} }[/math]가 된다.
